This is based on an education-related fraud racket that was exposed by the Mumbai Crime Branch in May 2013. The scam was uncovered at the Mumbai-based Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) University, which conducts the NMAT (Narsee Monjee Management Aptitude Test) for its MBA programs.
The university staff grew suspicious when certain candidates scored top marks in the written test but performed poorly during their group discussions and personal interviews. The management of NMIMS reported the issue to the Mumbai Crime Branch. During the initial stages of the investigation, it was discovered that there might be a loophole in the written test process, allowing dummy candidates to appear for the exam in place of the actual applicants.
During interrogation, a student revealed that while attending coaching classes, the coaching center in-charge introduced him to another individual who was presented as a career counsellor. This person encouraged students to secure admission to NMIMS through the management quota for a fee of ₹20 lakh. He also claimed that students would not be required to take the written test and would directly receive a call for the group discussion and personal interview sessions.
